Bereavement is a natural response to loss

Sooner or later we all lose someone we love. The grief that follows is a natural response to that loss.

Bereavement is not an illness or weakness. It is perfectly normal. We often move through several stages of grief before reaching a level of acceptance.

Grief is particularly acute immediately after a death. Even when expected, the shock of death can be highly intense, dominating our thoughts to the exclusion of everything else. Once the formalities of the funeral are over, we may operate on autopilot, living in a kind of haze.

Gradually, many enter an interim stage of grieving. Unexpected reminders may trigger a reaction. Something on TV or a song can bring back memories. Certain times of year, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, New Year and summer holidays can be particularly difficult.

Some may overwork in an attempt to block out grief. In others, eating patterns may change or sleep may be distorted. Some may underperform or become forgetful. Self-image and confidence can deteriorate and relationships can break down without the realisation that on-going grief is the root cause.

There are no set timescales to the process of grieving.

Just as everyone is different and unique, so is our experience of grieving and the length of time it takes. Grief is immensely complex. Not everyone is able pull themselves together quickly or ‘move on’ and look to the future. Help and support may be needed at any stage after a death – often for months or even years afterwards.
